RAÍZ — Imperfect Notebooks
CONTEXT
Independent notebook project developed in collaboration with CECATI, a public vocational school in Mexico City.
NAMING
RAÍZ — Spanish for “roots” and “origin”.
The name reflects how the product is rooted in its context — shaped by mexican craft, material and process. Its character is not designed on top, but emerges from how it’s made.
CHALLANGE
How to create a product with a strong identity while working within the realities of local craft production, existing skills and workshop constraints.
APPROACH
Working closely with bookbinding and screen-printing workshops, I developed the project from concept to market launch. Material choices, visual identity and production methods were shaped by the capabilities of local makers and the realities of small-scale production.
RESULTS
A limited-edition collection of notebooks positioned as objects with identity rather than mass-produced products, introduced through concept stores and gallery-oriented spaces in Mexico City.
WHAT I LEARNED
I learned how to work within existing systems rather than designing independently from them. Collaborating with workshops and makers reinforced the importance of adapting ideas to people, processes and constraints. It shifted my focus from designing products alone to creating conditions that allow ideas and opportunities to emerge.
